Chapter 13

Getting home after dusk should have felt like a relief after the day I had. But with everything feeling like it wasn’t quite back in its place after the search, it was hard to shake the revulsion tickling the back of my mind. Nobody should have their stuff rifled through like that. But with a warm mug of tea in my hands and my feet up on the coffee table, I felt like I could truly breathe for the first time that day. That was, until the peanut gallery decided I was ready to talk.

‘Did you learn something useful after absconding with the young officer?’ Gus stretched his front paws out and clawed at the carpet in a too-casual gesture. ‘I’m afraid the one in the suit collected remnants from your dress fire over the weekend.’

Crap. I sat upright, almost sloshing scalding hot tea over my wrist. “He did what now?”

‘I feel somewhat responsible. In our haste, we didn’t account for every eventuality. I watched him bag a small, pink scrap which must have escaped the flames.’

I just couldn’t get a break. And felt stupid for likewise not thinking about my impromptu garment burning moment. But that was the point of fires, wasn’t it? There shouldn’t have been anything left to find. Darn synthetic materials these days. I’m sure it would thrill the detective to confirm it was part of my ensemble at the wedding. At least my leg rash had quickly subsided after using the cream the doc had prescribed.

“If only Sorcha’s spell had covered that up, too, huh?” I rubbed my grainy eyes. “But that one’s my fault. Though you might have pointed out my evidence burning folly before I lit it up.”

‘Perhaps it would be prudent to discuss any steps you take in relation to the investigation from here on out,’ he sighed. ‘But Sorcha’s enchantment was indeed well crafted. The constabulary were oblivious to anything with a whiff of magic. In fact, I’m almost certain they didn’t see me.’

I would have likewise praised the nifty piece of sorcery that had saved my bacon, except that it had cost me control of my own body. Maybe that’s why the ancient witch was being quiet for once.

“Well, we need to turn our attention to who did murder Justine. I’m sick and tired of trying to prove I didn’t.”

‘And how should we—’

My phone rang, and I fished it out of the purse at my feet with a groan. Unless it was Dwyer calling to let me know they’d caught the killer—and it was nobody I knew—I wasn’t interested. That was until I saw the name flash on the screen.

“Amelia?” I answered. My medium contact from the Inquisition wasn’t a person I wanted to hear from with everything that was going down. “I’d love to say it’s great to hear from you but calls from the Inquisition make me nervous.”

Amelia chuckled, and I could almost picture her rolling hazel eyes. “Are you saying I’m bad at keeping in touch? I keep terrible hours solving crimes.
